What is costochondritis?

Quick latin lesson – ‘costo’ = rib, ‘chondro’ = cartilage and ‘itis’ = inflammation. So costochondritis = inflammation of the cartilage that connects your rib to your sternum (breastbone). Generally you’ll feel it as pain and often when breathing – especially deeply or coughing/sneezing. You also might get sore at night and find it super hard to find a comfortable position to sleep.

Why does costochondritis happen?

Usually this rib pain comes on without any clear reason. Might be that you’ve suddenly changed your role at work and it is now more physically demanding. Could be you’ve had a chest infection and have been coughing up a lung or 3. Might be that your stress levels are too high and your body is experiencing increased inflammation levels. But mostly, it happens without an injury.

What can you do about costochondritis? Costochondritis Physiotherapy in Newcastle.

First thing to do is to clear other serious medical issues. If the pain is on your left side of your chest, you need to see a doc to make sure its not a heart issue. Once they’ve made sure its not a dicky ticker you can try these things: anti-inflammatory medications (talk to your GP about this), rest – seems obvious but if you’re a front row rugby forward and your chest keeps getting sore – maybe try not tackling so much!? Then discuss with a good physio how you might be able to improve the movement through your upper back and help the muscles get stronger through your torso so you’re not a frequent flyer to the physio.

How long will costochondritis take?

This condition can typically can take 6 weeks to settle but may take longer if the inflammation is stubborn. You might be looking at up to 3 months if it’s especially grouchy.

Bright-tips

Don’t miss the heart. It’s best to check this early especially if the pain is L sided. Also – don’t discount how much your mental health, sleep and overall body load can contribute to these problems. Make sure you look at your whole health.
