Is This Sciatica?

BY Ben Hutton

Sciatica. We’ve all heard the word. I probably have at least two people per week telling me they think they might have it. But what is it?

Sciatica is an old term for a condition that we now call radiculopathy. Bit of a mouthful, but it’s just a term for pain and dysfunction caused by a problem at the nerve root in your back or neck. The sensation usually presents in your legs or arms and can cause pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or loss of strength.

A true radiculopathy can be scary, nerve pain isn’t normally something people have experienced before and the sensation of numbness, loss of strength and shooting pain can really scare people.

Gentle movement such as walking or hydrotherapy is a good way to teach your muscles that it’s okay to move

So- what should you do if this happens to you? Here’s a few tips on how to manage if you feel this is something you’re experiencing.

1. Don’t panic! Even though the pain can be bad and the sensations can be scary, most people will recover within 6 weeks. The first few weeks aren’t much fun – but it does get better.

2. Keep moving: When you’re in pain, your muscles tend to do a thing where they try to ‘lock up’ to ‘protect’ you. This usually isn’t very helpful as it makes you feel stiff and sore. Gentle movement such as walking or hydrotherapy is a good way to teach your muscles that it’s okay to move while maintaining strength.

3. See a good Physio: The initial stages of a radiculopathy can be quite painful, and a good physio will help you navigate your pain, keep you moving, give you strategies to ease your pain and liaise with other health professionals about the best way to help you.
